A matter of allure

A contemporary art exhibition where gold underlines the artists' discourse.

The Château de Nyon has long organised exhibitions in which old and contemporary art mingle, enabling different types of visitor to discover facets of art to which they would not necessarily have paid attention. This exhibition on the theme of gold in contemporary art on the ground floor of the castle resonates with the 18th century porcelain produced in Nyon exhibited on the first floor, in the form of an exceptional piece decorated with the monogram of its then owner - O R - in gold

Harald F. Theiss was commissioned for this exhibition and has brought together the works of some twenty artists, including some specially created for the occasion, like Stéphanie Saadé's "map" made out of gold leaf pasted to the floor. Other works, like Verirrungen (Aberration) by Claudia Kugler, play on the German words Gelb, Geld, Gold, and open up a new world.

Paralleling this exhibition in Nyon is a similar exhibition, again curated by Harald F. Theiss, in the Schloss Biesdorf in Berlin. Berlin was also the birthplace of Jacques – Jakob – Dortu, the founder of the Nyon porcelain factory (1781-1813). His grandfather had settled there, welcomed by the king fo Prussia, like other refugees who fled France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685.

In this way, links are forged between contemporary art and ancient art.
